Or so they say. This weekend, Dazed flew out to Lagos, Nigeria for the third annual MTV Africa Music.
Awards and spent a few days and some late nights meeting rap, R&B and kuduro superstars from across Africa: names like Banky W, Fally Ipupa, Daddy Owen, Cabo Snoop and Radio & Weasel, from Angola to Uganda, Democratic Republic of Congo and beyond, all huge stars in their own countries, selling truckloads of records despite rampant piracy and a rickety music industry. These guys are kind of the Jay Zs and Snoops of Africa, basically.
FOUNDER, CREATIVE DIRECTOR, DESIGNER. What started off as a protest against the re-election of President Bush, turned into a guerilla poster ad campaign. The success of this campaign served as the jumping off point for the launch of Periel's now infamous tee shirt company, Body as Billboard, founded on the tenet that we should use our bodies to "advertise for shit that matters." Her work was featured in the windows of high end boutiques including Catwalk, Intermix and knocked off by Agent Provcateur (imitation may well be the highest form of flattery). Some of her more well known fans include Susan Sarandon, Lili Taylor, Gloria Steinem, Betsey Johnson and Zoe Kravitz.
